Factory model introduced to schooling during the Industrial Revolution to teach people to endure working in manufacturing plants. "Schools were adapted to create people who could work in the factory"

US has over 2 million people in prison. Makes argument that we are training people to endure prison life.

Civil rights incompatible with getting an education. Clarence Thomas as particularly against students having or expecting 1st Amendment.

John Taylor Dada - teachers and clergy excluded from malpractice lawsuits.

'Kids are held to much higher standards than adults are held to... and the punishments are much higher... There is some cultural vindictiveness and repression of kids."

15:00 Scapegoating of youth
16:11 blame kids for the deterioration of society
12:42 Zero tolerance and drugging of kids signs of increased forced coersion
17:11 Pathologizing of youth culture - normal childhood treated as pathology. "Drapedemania " - condition named for slaves who wanted to run away.
18 "Oppositional defiance disorder" - kids who don't submit to authority.
18:25 - hysteria - called a biological problem rather than a response to social/environmental violence and oppression.
19 Looking at symptoms rather than underlying conditions. Kids have no say and no rights in school.

19:10 The more irrational a cultre is, the more problem they have with children. "Children are openly bewildered, and prior to being cowered by the applicaiton of power,... by the crazy aspects of our culture. That makes us feel like they are attacking us...
Children fundamentally don't get hierarchy, they don't get power, they don't get religion...culture ... patriotism. And their skepticsm, for especially for those in power, it just really chips away at their moral basis for that power.

And I think it's just one of those reasons there is this war on kids, that the more power you get, the more kids are skeptical of it, and the more power you need to cow and control them.

Mead - since Industrialization, children have developed their own culture independent of parents' culture - led to resentment of children having their own ways, and interest in having them maintain the culture of their parents.

1940s - attack on comic books
1950's - attack on rock and roll
Anything this is part of youth culture is considered a threat.

23:23 - Baby Boomer generation psyche is particularly egotistical. Methods of attacking anything foreign particularly severe.
